Travelogue Day 1

Iowa - Missouri - Kansas

We had a beautiful travel day! Once the clouds and mist lifted, the skies were blue and the clouds were like cotton candy. Our first stop was for breakfast - well, maybe more like brunch since we got a slightly later start than planned. I'm blaming it on the darn cat since she did one of her "hide under our bed" routines and DH had to root her out since we close the doors to all the rooms when we're away. Doesn't she know that she'd be stuck in there for a few days until my aunt and uncle came by???? What a dope.

Anyway...the breakfast stop was one of the Diners, Drive-ins, and Dives spots in Kansas City, which was a fun adventure.
We had some exceptional corned beef hash (homemade, and not like canned in any way), and their breakfast potatoes, called "browns" were great as well. Portions were huge, so if you ever go here - share a plate with a friend!

We then headed out for Dodge City, KS where we're spending the night. It's the town you've seen in so many westerns - Wyatt Earp, Bat Masterson, cattle drives. Most of the sites in town are of the touristy variety, but it appears from the advertisements around town, that during Dodge City Days in July, the history of this town is on display. Here are a few shots of Boot Hill, which actually is the name of a number of grave sites in the West that hold unknown cowboys and other lonely souls.

And what does one have for dinner in Dodge City? Steak of course. We had a really good meal at a steak house that's located on the site of an old depot for the Santa Fe Railway.
We ate inside an old railway car, complete with luggage in the overhead racks - very neat atmosphere. I have no idea who these people are, they just happened to be in the shot and I thought this guy's mustache was kind of Old West looking! That's our waitress chatting with them, and she was a sweetheart who was graduating from high school the next morning. She said "Goodbye and God bless" when we left - nice to know that hasn't been outlawed everywhere just yet!!

So, our first day was driving and eating for the most part. Soon it will be time to hit the road again and "get out of Dodge" - hee, hee! Tomorrow will bring quite the change of scenery.
